Week 8 - Role of Institutions❤❤

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : πŸ‘€Key Takeaways: Multi-Level Collaboration Global institutions set policies and provide resources National governments adapt these frameworks Local organizations implement solutions tailored to community needs This "top-to-bottom" approach ensures both wide reach and local relevance πŸ‘€Formal vs Informal Institutions Laws and policies (formal) provide structure Cultural norms and values (informal) shape how people respond Both types work together to maintain social order and drive development πŸ‘€Critical Challenges Corruption and weak enforcement undermine progress Institutional failures create inequalities in education, healthcare, and justice The "cow subsidy vs African wages" example showed how policies can sometimes perpetuate injustice πŸ‘€Personal Realizations Well-functioning institutions affect every part of our daily lives Sustainable development needs both strong systems and active citizen participation Islamic principles l...

Week 7 : The Challenges to Sustainable Development🧑🧑

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : In our Week 7 session of SCSH1201, we delved into the complex realities of implementing sustainable development and how deeply interconnected our world's systems truly are. The discussions revealed sobering truths about the obstacles we face: • Systemic inequalities in basic necessities like education, healthcare, and clean water • Disturbing global disparities (like European livestock subsidies exceeding African daily wages) • How social injustice directly undermines environmental progress • The beautiful alignment between Islamic values and sustainability principles Powerful Realizations πŸ‘Every issue connects - climate change, poverty, and public health are threads of the same fabric πŸ‘Islamic teachings offer timeless solutions (Zakat for wealth distribution, Khalifah for stewardship) πŸ‘The time for action isn't tomorrow - it's this very moment

Week 6 : Universities : Shaping a Sustainable Future🀎🀎

🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : The Transformative Shift in Education: From Efficiency to Humanity The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally reshaped our approach to education and life, marking a profound transition from a system driven by cold efficiency to one that values human connection. Before COVID: Our education system operated on three pillars: Manpower (quantity over quality) Mind (cognitive development alone) Machine (technology as tool rather than partner) After COVID: We've awakened to four essential human dimensions: Humanity (compassion in learning) Heart (emotional intelligence) High Touch (meaningful connections despite digital spaces) Humility (recognizing our interdependence) πŸ”₯Our Mission as Students πŸ“š Study not just to score, but to serve. Let every lesson equip us to lift others up. 🌱 Choose careers that heal both society and the environment. Our work should leave the world better than we found it. πŸ’– Carry ethics like a compass, compassion like a light, a...

Week 5 : Living the Spirit of Sejahtera: A Malaysian Way to True Sustainability πŸ’™πŸ’™

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : For this week class, we explored a concept that feels deeply personal and culturally rich — Sejahtera. It’s not just a term or academic theory; it’s a meaningful way of life, grounded in our values, our faith, and the way we treat one another every day. πŸ’š Rather than simply following global sustainability trends, we realized that we already hold a beautiful, homegrown approach to harmony, prosperity, and well-being — and that is Sejahtera. Sejahtera: πŸ™Peace – inner tranquility and harmony with the world around us πŸ™ Safety and Justice – a life free from harm, oppression, and inequality πŸ™ Well-being and Growth – in health, wealth, and spirituality πŸ™ Spiritual Connection – strengthening our relationship with Allah and His creation πŸ‘€The Importance of Localizing Sustainability in Malaysia When it comes to sustainability, we can't just copy what other countries are doing – we need to make it our own. The key is adapting global ideas to fit Mal...

Week 4 - International Framework for Sustainable Development & the Concept of Sejahtera🧑🧑

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : Today's lesson really made sustainability feel personal. The global frameworks were impressive, but what truly resonated were the human connections - how these policies affect real lives, and how the Sejahtera philosophy makes it all relatable to my daily existence. 🌐 Key Takeaways That Moved Me:      1.The Human Side of Global Agreements Learning how developing nations found their voice in climate negotiations reminded me that sustainability is ultimately about people standing up for their future. Ambassador Das Gupta's powerful words - "we address this together or go down together" - gave me chills.      2.Sejahtera as Daily Practice The definition of Sejahtera as "aman dan makmur" (safe and prosperous) struck me as so simple yet profound. It's not about grand achievements, but the basic human needs for security, health, and peace.      3.Islamic Principles as Life Guidance The concept of Khalifah (s...

Week 3 - Maqasid al-Shariah and Sustainable Development – A Spiritual and Ethical Vision for the Future πŸ’›πŸ’›

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : After learning about Maqasid al-Shariah and how it connects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , I’m honestly amazed at how Islam has always supported sustainability—even before it became a global concept. 🌐 The 5Ps of Sustainable Development: People – Focus on human dignity, equity, and social well-being. Planet – Protecting the environment and using resources responsibly. Prosperity – Encouraging inclusive economic growth and fair opportunities. Peace – Promoting justice, harmony, and strong institutions. Partnership – Working together locally and globally to achieve shared goals. What impressed me most is how these 5Ps are strongly reflected in Islamic principles , especially through Maqasid al-Shariah , which emphasizes justice, compassion, and balance in all aspects of life. One thing that touched me deeply was the reminder that spirituality is at the heart of sustainability . As Muslims, we’re not just livin...

Week 2 : Islam and Sustainable Development πŸ’šπŸ’š

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class :      In Islam, taking care of the Earth isn’t just a good thing to do—it’s part of our faith. As Khalifah (stewards), we’re responsible for the environment, people, and resources. Islam covers social , environmental , and economic sustainability—from fairness and justice to avoiding waste and sharing wealth Social Sustainability: Khalifah (Vicegerency) – Humans are responsible for maintaining balance on Earth. Shura (Consultation) – Decision-making must be participatory and just. Amanah (Trust & Responsibility) – Leadership and governance must be ethical. Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin (Mercy to all creation) – Islam promotes peace, justice, and welfare for all. Environmental Sustainability: No harm, no infliction of harm – Resources must be used responsibly. Mizan (Balance) – Ecological stability must be maintained. Tahrim al-Israf (Prohibition o...

Week 1 : Introduction to Sustainable Development 🌍

Image
🌍 What I Learned Today in Class : In today’s class with Prof. Suhaimi, we watched a video and went through slides that talked about sustainable development and systems thinking . To be honest, the video helped me understand how everything is connected—how the way we think, act, and live can affect the environment, society, and economy all at once. One of the biggest takeaways for me was this definition: Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. That really hit me. It’s not just about saving trees or using less plastic—it’s about making sure we’re not selfish with the world we live in. We also learned about the 5 core principles of sustainable development, known as the 5Ps : People – Taking care of each other and fighting poverty Planet – Protecting our environment for the future Prosperity – Helping everyone live a good and fulfilling life Peace – Promoting just...
