Week 3 - Maqasid al-Shariah and Sustainable Development – A Spiritual and Ethical Vision for the Future πŸ’›πŸ’›

🌍 What I Learned Today in Class :
After learning about Maqasid al-Shariah and how it connects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I’m honestly amazed at how Islam has always supported sustainability—even before it became a global concept.

🌐 The 5Ps of Sustainable Development:

  1. People – Focus on human dignity, equity, and social well-being.

  2. Planet – Protecting the environment and using resources responsibly.

  3. Prosperity – Encouraging inclusive economic growth and fair opportunities.

  4. Peace – Promoting justice, harmony, and strong institutions.

  5. Partnership – Working together locally and globally to achieve shared goals.

What impressed me most is how these 5Ps are strongly reflected in Islamic principles, especially through Maqasid al-Shariah, which emphasizes justice, compassion, and balance in all aspects of life.

One thing that touched me deeply was the reminder that spirituality is at the heart of sustainability. As Muslims, we’re not just living for ourselves—we’re Khalifah, caretakers of the Earth. So even simple things like reducing waste, eating halal and tayyib, and being mindful of nature are acts of worship.

I also found it inspiring to see that other religions like Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism also promote care for the environment. It made me feel hopeful—like we’re all in this together.

  1. That’s a beautiful and powerful reflection! It really highlights how sustainability is not just an environmental or social issue, but a deeply spiritual responsibility rooted in our faith.

  2. I agree. As Khalifah, we are indeed the caretakers of the Earth. Therefore, it is our job to ensure a sustainable development.
