Week 1 : Introduction to Sustainable Development 🌍

🌍 What I Learned Today in Class :

In today’s class with Prof. Suhaimi, we watched a video and went through slides that talked about sustainable development and systems thinking. To be honest, the video helped me understand how everything is connected—how the way we think, act, and live can affect the environment, society, and economy all at once.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was this definition:

Sustainable development means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

That really hit me. It’s not just about saving trees or using less plastic—it’s about making sure we’re not selfish with the world we live in.

We also learned about the 5 core principles of sustainable development, known as the 5Ps:

  • People – Taking care of each other and fighting poverty

  • Planet – Protecting our environment for the future

  • Prosperity – Helping everyone live a good and fulfilling life

  • Peace – Promoting justice and safety in communities

  • Partnership – Working together, globally and locally

During this Ta’aruf session, we introduced ourselves by sharing details like our names, where we’re from, the schools we attended, and a little about who we are—all within 100 words. Though simple, this activity strengthened our class’s sense of connection. We also shared personal reflections on what sustainable development means to us
